Lamar Community College expands art offerings, welcomes new instructors

With the introduction of two new art instructors, Lamar Community College has expanded its art offerings for the upcoming fall semester.  Jason Gorcoff and Kevin Foster will lead students and community members alike in two drawing courses, two jewelry-making courses and the brand new Mixed Media I: Digital Art.

LCC is excited to launch Mixed Media I, which is brand new to the college.  This course introduces students to the design and creation of artwork through a combination of techniques like drawing, painting, photography, and more.  This class will also introduce the use of technology-based vector and raster applications, but students do not need to have prior computer experience.

This course will be taught by Jason Gorcoff, who comes to LCC with a wide range of experience and great ideas for how to grow the art program at LCC.

Gorcoff is originally from Long Island, New York.  He studied sculpture and drawing at Maine College of Art and received his MFA in Painting from Indiana State University.  He has worked in the commercial art field for several years doing model-making and freelance illustration and has shown paintings in galleries in New York, Pennsylvania, Indiana, and California.

Gorcoff will also teach two drawing courses (ART 121, ART 221) and Art Appreciation (ART 110) this fall.

He intends to incorporate LCC’s new Innovate & Make Space technology into the Mixed Media course as well, including making models for a stop-motion animation project.

Kevin Foster will teach Jewelry and Metalwork (ART 133, ART 233) after taking over the courses from his grandmother and long-time LCC art instructor, Jenny Dooley.  Foster works as a fulltime gunsmith in the Prowers County area and is a skilled artist.
