Construction Trades Options
Associate of Applied Science in Construction Trades
This comprehensive two-year degree program prepares students to pursue a variety of professional career opportunities in the construction trades industry. These certificates are designed to prepare students for careers as:
• Construction Workers
• Plumbers
• Carpenters
The curriculum stresses a balance of classroom, technical and hands-on learning within the context of the industry’s current practices. By the end of the program students can communicate a sound theoretical understanding of construction practices and demonstrate proficiency in the trades’ skills including (exterior framing, windows & doors, finish work, drywall, document professional, etc.) and/or with general contractor. Students also demonstrate professionalism in the workplace, a sound understanding of ethical business practices, and communication with clients.
As a result of completing the Construction Trades Associate of Applied Science Degree at Lamar Community College, students will be able to:
1. Identify various hand and power tools used on construction sites, their intended use and how to safely operate them.
2. Identify multiple materials used for building and construction and understand their different applications.
3. Complete an OSHA 10HR Certificate course and obtain a 10HR card.
4. Identify and apply framing techniques as they apply to walls, windows, and doors.
5. Understand the processes behind and install exterior materials including but not limited to: exterior sheathing, flashing, various types of siding and trims, stucco, concrete, and
roofing.
6. Identify and install interior finishing materials including but not limited to: drywall, texture, insulation, flooring, trim, cabinets, countertops, tile, and paint.
7. Properly measure, identify, and install interior doors and hardware as shown on construction documents or as distinguished in the field.
8. Understand the construction process from bidding to contracting as well as building codes, their importance, and how they apply to onsite building.
9. Understand the importance of timeliness and professionalism in a workplace.
The Construction Trades and Construction Trades – Essential certificate programs offer students the workforce skills to perform the essential functions within the scope of practice that an individual desires a career/employment in. The certificates are “stackable” into the AAS degree.
Construction Trades Certificates
Construction Trades certificates prepare graduates to directly enter the construction trades industry. The certificates are designed to be completed in one year. The curriculum also provides the flexibility for experienced contractors and trades practitioners to upgrade or broaden their skills and knowledge. Students may earn a certificate in one or more of six specialties. The certificate program includes many courses required in the Associate of Applied Science Degree and credits may be applied toward earning the degree.
Construction Trades Essentials Certificate
The Construction Trades Essentials Certificate provides entry-level as well as upgrading skills courses for a solid foundation in construction. This certificate includes an introduction to carpentry, computer-aided drafting, hand and power tools, and OSHA industry standards, all while getting plenty of hands-on experience.
Construction Trades Interior Certificate
This certificate provides entry-level as well as upgrading skills courses for a solid foundation of interior building remodeling and new construction methods. This certificate includes hands-on learning of renovation of existing spaces to include design elements and estimations of costs, drywall installation, interior door installation, and the selection and application of interior trim choices.
Program Prerequisites: Successful completion of Essentials Certificate and Exterior Certificate or instructor permission required to enter Interior Building Certificate.
Construction Trades Exterior Certificate
This Certificate provides entry-level as well as upgrading skills courses for a solid foundation of exterior building renovation and new construction. This certificate includes hand-on learning in framing, sizing and installation of windows and exterior doors, and the various materials and techniques used for exterior finishes and trim.
Program Prerequisites: Successful completion of Essentials Certificate or instructor permission required to enter Exterior Building Certificate.
Construction Trades Mastery Certificate
This certificate provides entry level as well as upgrading skills courses for a solid foundation of the industry’s current practices to include the practitioner’s licensing requirements, types and content of construction documents, liability and management-labor functions, design techniques, roles and responsibilities of professionals in the industry. The individual enrolling in this certificate will have an option of taking a course in shielded metal arc (welding) or solar as it relates to installation at renovation or new building construction.
Program Prerequisites: Successful completion of Essentials Certificate, Exterior Certificate, and Interior Certificate or instructor permission required to enter the Mastery Certificate.
