Cosmetology Options
LCC’s Cosmetology program offers Barber, Cosmetology, Hair Stylist and Nail Technician certificate programs, as well as an AAS in Cosmetology. Each certificate/degree program provides students with the skills and knowledge to successfully complete a certificate exam for licensure in the subject area. These programs meet the Colorado State Board of Barbers and Cosmetology contact hour requirements and are designed to prepare students for careers as:
• Cosmetologists
• Hairstylists
• Manicurists
• Estheticians (skin)
• Barbers
Certificate programs develop skills for employment and are not intended for transfer into advanced programs in college and universities.
Associates of Applied Science Degree in Cosmetology
The AAS in Cosmetology is designed both to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to complete the exam for licensure as a cosmetologist and to earn general education credits for a more well-rounded course of study. The program’s learning outcomes focus on sanitation practices, haircutting and styling, chemical uses in the salon, and skin and nail care. Students demonstrate professionalism in the workplace, a sound understanding of ethical business practices, and communication with clients. (Catalog)
Graduates of this program will be able to:
- Take a practical board exam, which includes: demonstrating proper disinfection and sanitation practices for all disciplines within their scope of practice.
- Take a written board exam, which includes assessment on the following concepts: theoretical knowledge on ethics, image, historical, hair and scalp, skin, chemical texture, color, hairstyling, nail structure, nail diseases, and licensure within their desired scope of practice.
- Effectively conduct client consultations that are individualized, sensitive to the scope of service the client desires, and make applicable recommendations for the client’s care plan.
- Effectively illustrate proficiency with adapting to a variety of haircuts for both men and women.
- Compare, contrast and apply knowledge of the advantages and disadvantages between owning business space, booth rental and commission-based models in the industry when researching employment opportunities.
- Illustrate and apply professional employability skills, such as the importance of being timely and effective scheduling techniques.
- Research, identify and integrate cutting edge and currently trending haircuts for men and women, including the following techniques: analyzation of the hair, scalp and facial shape, waving, coloring, facials, makeup selection and application, facial hair removal, manicuring, pedicuring, and artificial nail application.
Associates of Applied Science Degree in Barbering
Graduates of this program will be able to:
- Take a practical board exam, which includes: demonstrating proper disinfection and sanitation practices for all disciplines within their scope of practice.

The Cosmetology, Barbering, Hair Stylist and Nail Technician certificate programs offer students the workforce skills to perform the essential functions within the scope of practice that an individual desires a career/employment in. The four certificates are “stackable” into the AAS degrees.
Cosmetology Certificate
The Cosmetology Department offers four certificate programs designed to provide the successful graduate with the skills and knowledge needed to acquire licensure in these fields. The course of study in each field has been approved by the Colorado State Office of Barbers and Cosmetology. The Cosmetology certificate is designed to provide students with knowledge and skills necessary to complete the exam for licensure as a cosmetologist. Instruction is provided through classroom, clinical, and applied learning activities delivered in three phases: introduction, intermediate, and advanced. Students may enter the program in the fall, spring, or summer semester.
Barbering Certificate/Barbering Add-on Certificate
The Barber certificate is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to complete the exam for licensure as a barber, including working with the scalp and hair of the head, performing face shaving and beard trimming and basic barber facials. Instruction is provided through classroom, clinical, and applied learning activities. It offers the newest techniques and hands-on experience needed, as well as the business skills and management preparation to launch a successful career in the barbering industry. The course of study has been approved by the Colorado State Office of Barbers and Cosmetology.
Hair Stylist Certificate
The Hair Stylist Certificate is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to complete the exam for licensure as a hair stylist. Instruction is provided through classroom, clinical, and applied learning activities delivered in three phases: introduction, intermediate, and advanced. Nail Technician Certificate
The Nail Technician Certificate is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to complete the exam for licensure as a nail technician. Instruction is provided through classroom, clinical, and applied learning activities delivered in three phases: introduction, intermediate, and advanced. Courses are offered in the summer semester only.
As a student in the Cosmetology, Barbering, or Nail Tech programs, you’ll get plenty of hands-on experience in the LCC Salon. You’ll gain real-world experience in a range of capacities in our full-service salon and be ready to enter the workforce once you’ve finished your program.
