Students and staff participate in Clothesline Project, raise awareness of Sexual Assault

students decorating t-shirtsIn observance of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Lamar Community College participated in the Clothesline Project, an event intended to raise awareness for violence against women.  The Clothesline Project is a visual display of T-shirts that bears witness to sexual and domestic violence.  Each shirt is decorated by a survivor or someone who cares about a survivor or victim.

Through this project, LCC students and staff decorated t-shirts with messages to survivors, statistics regarding sexual assault or domestic violence, and even calls to action to end this violence.

These t-shirts will be on display this week on the LCC campus, Tuesday through Saturday, April 18-22.  They will be hung in between the Betz Technology Center and the Bowman Building; alternatively, if the weather worsens, the shirts will be on display in the Betz Atrium.  The entire community is invited to stop by campus to see the project.

“Sexual and domestic violence are national problems,” said LCC President Dr. Linda Lujan.  “Participating in events like the Clothesline Project and Walk a Mile in Her Shoes is an opportunity to increase education and awareness of the issues. LCC is pleased to join with other colleges across the country to engage our students in these events.”

The t-shirts will remain on display through the Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event, which will be held on Saturday, April 22.

During Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, participants will literally walk a mile in women’s shoes to help raise awareness and start difficult conversations about gender relations and violence against women.  All are invited and encouraged to attend; the event is free and all ages are welcome.  It will start at 10:00am and participants will meet on the lawn outside the Betz Technology Center.
