Accessibility and Accommodations

Disability Services at Lamar Community College

Lamar Community College is committed to providing an inclusive, accessible, and supportive educational environment for all students. Our Disability Services team works to ensure students with documented disabilities have equal access to academic programs, services, and campus life.

We recognize that every student has unique needs. To better support our diverse student body, we offer three levels of disability-related support:

Option 1: Access

Traditional Disability Services

For students with documented disabilities who are seeking academic accommodations such as extended testing time, note-taking support, or accessible materials. These services are provided in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.

Academic accommodations are intended to provide a student with equal access to learning and an equal opportunity to demonstrate the same knowledge as all peers. The same tasks are expected to be completed but with some variation in time, format, setting, or presentation. Academic accommodations cannot alter the essential functions of coursework.

Examples:

  • Giving students extra time on assignments
  • Offering notes, outlines, or adaptive devices
  • Allowing answers to be dictated
  • Providing extra visual and verbal cues
  • Use of recording devices in class

Option 2: Enriched Support

Enhanced Support Services

For students who qualify for academic accommodations and would benefit from additional, individualized supports. These services may include:

  • Regular check-ins with a support coordinator
  • Academic coaching and skill-building
  • Access to life skill development workshops
  • Social support and community connection

It’s ideal for students who are looking for more than traditional accommodations but do not need the full scope of an inclusive higher education program.

Option 3: Cultivate

Inclusive Higher Education Program

Cultivate is LCC’s inclusive higher education (IHE) program for students with intellectual disabilities who want to experience college life in a fully supported environment with access to academic accommodations and modifications.

Modifications are intended to change what students are expected to learn based on their individual abilities, which indicate needing additional changes in order to comprehend the content. This involves an adjustment to the level of required content or performance measures.

Examples:

  • Using alternative books/materials
  • Decreasing number of tasks or exam questions
  • Lessoning the length expectation of a paper
  • Rewording questions on exams in simpler language
  • Adapting grading scale based upon Cultivate staff determination and collaboration with instructors.

The Cultivate program provides:

  • Personalized academic pathways
  • Social integration and peer mentorship
  • Career exploration and internship opportunities
  • Life skills development

Cultivate students are fully engaged in the campus community and receive ongoing support tailored to their individual goals and needs.

Cultivate students are expected to pay an additional fee for the services received.

Whether you’re requesting a simple accommodation or exploring a fully inclusive college experience, we’re here to help you thrive.
