The Sports & Exercise Science program at Lamar Community College provides students with a strong foundation in the scientific principles of human movement, health, fitness, and physical performance. Through a combination of classroom instruction, laboratory experiences, and hands-on learning opportunities, students develop the knowledge and practical skills needed to pursue careers in health, fitness, and human performance or continue their education in related bachelor’s degree programs.

The program emphasizes anatomy and physiology, exercise, wellness, injury prevention, and evidence-based decision-making to help students understand how physical activity influences health, performance, and quality of life. Students are encouraged to develop critical thinking skills and apply current scientific evidence and professional best practices to evaluate health and fitness outcomes. Graduates are prepared to apply scientific knowledge, practical skills, and professional behaviors in a variety of healthcare, fitness, and sports-related settings.

Degrees & Certificates

The Associate of Science in Sports & Exercise Science combines rigorous coursework with practical learning experiences to prepare students for transfer into bachelor's degree programs and future careers in health, fitness, and human performance. Students develop a strong understanding of human anatomy and physiology, health assessment, exercise principles, injury prevention, and wellness while learning to evaluate information using current scientific evidence and professional best practices. This degree is designed to prepare students for continued education in bachelor's degree programs such as Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Athletic Training, Pre-Physical Therapy, Strength and Conditioning, Sports Medicine, and other health- and human performance-related disciplines. Students also have the opportunity to prepare for the National Council on Strength and Fitness Certified Personal Trainer (NCSF-CPT) examination. Successful completion of the examination results in certification as a Certified Personal Trainer. Program graduates will be able to:

Apply knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, and exercise science principles to promote health, fitness, and physical performance.
Demonstrate appropriate techniques for the care and prevention of athletic injuries while understanding the scientific principles that support injury prevention.
Evaluate health, fitness, and lifestyle factors that influence individual wellness using current assessment methods.
Develop safe, individualized exercise and wellness programs using evidence-based guidelines and professional standards.
Analyze scientific information and apply evidence-based practices when making health, fitness, and wellness recommendations.
Demonstrate critical thinking, professional communication, ethical decision-making, teamwork, and employability skills expected in healthcare and fitness professions.
Have the option to take the National Council on Strength and Fitness Certified Personal Trainer (NCSF-CPT) examination.

The Health and Wellness Certificate program is focused on developing students who can demonstrate knowledge of human movement to improve quality of life for both individuals and society. It will prepare students for jobs in personal training, as well as in physical and occupational therapy settings. Certificate recipients will be able to:

Illustrate and apply professional employability skills, such as the ability to communicate, convey and design personalized health promotion programs for individuals.
Apply an understanding of human movement, personal training and physical therapy to the Health and Wellness professional industry.
Research, design and implement health assessment tools for the purpose of individualizing clients’ progression plans.
Emphasize and promote cultural competency in professional, community and classroom settings.
