LCC hosts hundreds for FFA Career Development

On Wednesday, April 5, Lamar Community College welcomed nearly 700 high school students to campus for the FFA Career Development Day.  694 FFA members from 34 schools from across the state participated in the event.  This number is significant considering nine schools were unable to make the event due to the recent snow and poor road conditions.

“It is great to see FFA members from across the state come to LCC for our contest,” said Greg Cash, LCC Ag faculty and coordinator of the day’s events.  “We have a great team of volunteers who give many hours of their time to make this a great contest and it shows.  Our contest grows every year.”

The contest featured a wide range of activities from Ag Sales to Floriculture to Veterinary Science, all helping the students to gain knowledge and experience in their chosen event.

The high individual winners in each contest were Brandley Johnson (Kit Carson) for Ag Business, Lucas Tinnes (Lamar) for Ag Mechanics, Maddie Thompson (Wiley) for Ag Sales, Trey Livingston (Cheyenne Wells) for Agronomy, Camden Wilson (Pritchett) for Crops, Jeanette Steerman (McClave) for Employment Skills (Job Interview), Kendra Noe (Cheyenne Wells) for Floriculture, Abby Nidey (McClave) for Horse Judging, Madalyn Rohr (Douglas County) for Livestock Judging, Carissa Cardenas (La Veta) for Meats, Shaylee Andreatta (La Veta) for Milk Quality, and Haleigh Prosser (Wiley) for Vet Science.

The judges also ranked teams in each category with the exception of Employment Skills, a solely individual event.

First place went to McClave for Ag Business, Lamar for Ag Mechanics, Burlington for Ag Sales, Cheyenne Wells for Agronomy, Pritchett for Crops, Pueblo County for Horse Judging, Douglas County for Livestock Judging, and Rye for Vet Science. La Veta High School won three separate categories including Floriculture, Meats, and Milk.

Lamar High School and Lucas Tinnes, the Ag Mechanics winners, left the competition with additional supplies to help them continue to excel.  Tinnes earned an auto-darkening welding hood and a pair of leather welding gloves, while the LHS team won a cutting torch assembly for their school’s FFA chapter.  These prizes were donated courtesy of Air Gas of Lamar.

While the majority of the event was held on campus at LCC, three events were held off-site including Ag Mechanics (Lamar High School), Agronomy (held in the field), and Livestock (Prowers County Fairgrounds).

Hosting a contest of this size would not be possible without the help of many people.  Special thanks go out to Thoughts and Bloom in Lamar, John Ogden, Chris Wilkinson, Air Gas in Lamar, and many other individuals that donated hours of their time.
