Lamar Community College will host a team from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) on October 15-17 of this year to review the College’s continued ability to meet the HLC’c criteria for accreditation.
Dr. Linda Lujan, LCC President, encouraged all to consider providing comments for this process.
“LCC values feedback from the public during this important process,” she said. “Meeting accreditation standards is very important to the college, but even more important is ensuring we are serving our communities well.”
LCC has been accredited by the HLC since 1976.
The Higher Learning Commission (HLC) is an independent corporation founded in 1895 as one of six regional institutional accreditors in the United States. HLC accredits degree-granting post-secondary educational institutions in the north central region. The commission is governed by a board of trustees elected by the membership.
The HLC criteria for accreditation include:
- Mission – The institution’s mission is clear and articulated publicly; it guides the institution’s operations.
- Integrity: Ethical and Responsible Conduct – The institution acts with integrity; its conduct is ethical and responsible.
- Teaching and Learning: Quality, Resources and Support – The institution provides high quality education, wherever and however its offerings are delivered.
- Teaching and Learning: Evaluation and Improvement – The institution demonstrates responsibility for the quality of its educational programs, learning environments and support services, and it evaluates their effectiveness for student learning through processes designed to promote continuous improvement.
- Resources, Planning and Institutional Effectiveness – The institution’s resources, structures and processes are sufficient to fulfill its mission, improve the quality of its educational offerings and respond to future challenges and opportunities. The institution plans for the future.
Lamar Community College is currently seeking comments from students and their families, alumni, taxpayers, community members, local businesses, donors, and any other individuals with an invested interest in the College.
“As we look forward to welcoming our peer reviewers to LCC in October, we know how powerful community feedback is to help accreditors understand our work in Southeast Colorado,” LCC’s accreditation liaison Kelly Emick said. “The voice of our students and community members is critical, and we appreciate all who take time to share their views on LCC.”
Comments must address substantive matters related to the quality of Lamar Community College or its academic programs and must be submitted no later than September 15, 2018. HLC will compile the results and send them to both the review team and LCC three week prior to the visit.
