Program Overview

Our Horse Training and Management and Equine Business Management programs prepare students for employment in a variety of areas in the horse industry. While these programs are not intended for transfer, some institutions may accept some or all of the coursework toward a bachelor’s degree. Consult with an academic advisor or LCC’s Transfer Coordinator for more information concerning transfer opportunities.

By the end of each semester, students gain proficiency in some aspect of the horse industry. These programs are hands-on whether in the classroom at the barn or in the arena. Student learning for riding courses in both the Horse Training & Management and Equine Business Management programs are judged at the end of each semester at the horse show. Students demonstrate their proficiency at training their horse and/or improving their horsemanship skills to complete various patterns in the arena.

Students also gain employable skills through the program’s work ethic and communication standards with instructors, program partners, and horse owners. Students partake in feed crew, which allows them to become comfortable taking care of 50+ horses daily. Students are responsible for the daily care of the horses they use for classes. Additionally, our absence policy teaches students the importance of showing up on time, or early, for their duties. Those who choose to complete the Associates Degree are measured by their performance on a capstone internship. Enrollment is limited to allow for individualized instruction.

Lamar Community College’s Horse Training & Management Program accepts approximately 90 two-year old colts each year for students to green-break and another 30 horses for advanced training. These horses are received from breeders from several states. Breeders must apply to get their horses into the program. Please contact our HTM instructor if you are interested in sending a horse to our HTM program.

Program History

In the 1970s, Lamar Community College started offering an associate’s degree in Horse Training and Management. A group of ranchers came together and saw the need for this education. Fast forward fifty years and these programs are still going strong. Today, Lamar Community College offers associate degrees in Horse Training and Management and Equine Business Management. We truly enjoy working with our students and seeing them excel in the horse industry following graduation!

Degrees & Certificates

The A.A.S. in HTM - Horse Training and Management degree is arranged in a sequence of courses designed to effectively combine theory with practical experience. Therefore, students may enter the program only during the fall semester and are expected to progress through the sequence of courses within a two-year period. In addition to satisfying the 15 credits of general education requirements of the A.A.S. degree, students are tasked to “green break” at least three colts and specialize train one additional horse. Finally, after successful completion of their coursework, students must complete an internship with a trainer of their choice to finish their degree(s). Program graduates will be able to:

Effectively demonstrate proficiency in chores and tasks required for working safely in a barn environment.
Illustrate and apply professional employability skills, such as the importance of being timely and providing quality care for animals.
Describing and executing the task of saddling a colt.
Discuss and exhibit the task of bridling a colt.
Produce evidence that they can manage a colt through the processes of walking, trotting and loping.
Demonstrate the ability to produce and perform a showmanship pattern with colts, demonstrating groundwork progression.

Equine Business Management is designed to provide students with the skills necessary to successfully place them into the equine industry. Although students improve their horsemanship skills, more emphasis is placed on the business management aspect of the equine industry. Students sharpen their business knowledge and skills then complete their degrees with an internship with an equine professional of their choice. Program graduates will be able to:

Effectively demonstrate proficiency in chores and tasks required for working safely in a barn environment.
Illustrate and apply professional employability skills, such as the importance of being timely and providing quality care for animals.
Demonstrate an applicable knowledge in general industry horsemanship by discovering, analyzing and putting to use various forms of riding equipment and current trends in horse care.
Examine, coordinate and operate suppling exercises with horses.
Produce, perform and evaluate a showmanship pattern with their horse, demonstrating groundwork progression and the knowledge to assess horse progression.
Define and apply the knowledge required to address individual care needs and prepare their horse for competition.

Fill out the Horse Student Questionnaire. You can complete the questionnaire online to schedule your riding interview!

After you’ve applied and completed the questionnaire, wait for notification of admission to the college. You will receive a letter in the mail notifying you of your official admission and your assigned advisor. Horse Program FAQs

Do we bring our horse with us?

If you are in the Equine Business Management program, you will need to bring a horse with you. You do not need to own the horse. For the Horse Training and Management program, horses are brought in by breeders.

How can we get a horse in the Horse Training and Management program?

We have an application process for these horses to ensure high-quality horses. You can contact our HTM instructor for that application.

Do we need to bring our own hay?

No, we will supply alfalfa hay for all horses in the programs. No other hay is to be brought to the programs.

How much does board cost for program horses?

In the Equine Business Management program, a board fee of $950, which covers hay, shavings, and stalling, is applied to students’ bills. In the Horse Training and Management program, owners pay the board and scholarship fee.

What methods are used in the Horse Training and Management program?

We do not limit our methods to a certain training program. We recognize that different horses need different timelines. Our timelines are generally very similar to those of a performance horse trainer.

How will we choose our internship site?

Students are able to choose the internship site of their preference. In our introduction to internship course, instructors will provide recommendations and guidance to students. It is highly encouraged that students do not intern at home.

Should we take college courses in high school before coming to LCC?

Yes! While it is certainly not required, we recommend taking general education courses in high school before coming to LCC if you are able. We recommend looking into these courses: English, math, public speaking, introduction to PC, and elective credits.

What will we get to do in our riding classes?

In both programs, students ride 7 days a week and will get to experience multiple Western classes and events. In the Horse Training and Management program, riding courses are focused on green breaking high-quality 2-year-old colts and furthering specialized training on 2-5 year old horses. In the Equine Business Management program, riding courses are focused on furthering students’ horsemanship skills on the ground, while riding, and while teaching other riders.

Are there scholarship opportunities?

What are the health requirements for HTM Horses?

Required to have health papers from a licensed veterinarian within two weeks of arriving at LCC.
Preferred to also have a negative Coggins test within the last twelve months.
Will receive an influenza/Rhinopneumonitis vaccination at LCC, which will be billed to the owner.
Will follow the gastrointestinal condition treatment protocol.

What are the health requirements for EBM and Ranch Horse Team Horses?

Required to have health papers from a licensed veterinarian within two weeks of arriving at LCC.
Required to have a negative Coggins test within the same calendar year of arriving at LCC.
Must have proof of vaccination for Rabies, Tetanus, West Nile, Western Encephalomyelitis/Eastern Encephalomyelitis, and Influenza/Rhinopneumonitis “Flu/Rhino” at least one month before and not more than twelve months from arriving at LCC.
Ranch Horse Team Horses also need brand papers for traveling throughout the school year.
Will follow the gastrointestinal condition treatment protocol.

Faculty & Coaches

Life experiences can radically change how we perceive ourselves and our lives; they can also enrich them. When teachers share their experience and bring skills to others, this enrichment becomes magnified. Lamar Community College Horse Training & Management and Equine Business Management students receive the benefit of learning from industry leaders.

Savanna Mauch, Horse Training and Management Instructor

Savanna holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science with a minor in Equine Studies and a Master of Education degree from South Dakota State University. In addition to being our HTM instructor, she is also our Ag, Equine and Rodeo Department Chair. She grew up riding and showing with all around, versatility, and cow horse trainers who all influenced her horsemanship and training style.

During college, she was on the Division I Equestrian Team at South Dakota State University. At LCC, Savanna is a part of the team that teaches the basic care and training, advanced performance training, specialized training, introduction to internship, and internship courses. Alongside Kelli Gaines, Savanna started our ranch horse team in 2022. She has also been instrumental in LCC getting rope horse training equipment, our round pen and cutting pen facility, a cutting flag for the Horse Training and Management program and starting and managing the Lamar Legacy Horse Sale. She also helps to manage our Rodeo Bible Camp. Her goal is to help students become well-rounded in their knowledge and continue to grow to become leaders in the horse training industry. She says, “the HTM program at LCC has a rich history of producing industry leading and well-respected horse trainers and I am honored to be able to continue that legacy.” Outside of LCC, her husband Skyler, daughter and her own and operate a cow calf operation and Savanna enjoys showing in the versatility classes. She is strong in her faith and thankful for being led to LCC in 2019.

Jaci Brown, Equine Business Management Instructor

Jaci is our Equine Business Management instructor. Jaci grew up in the panhandle of Texas, graduating from Stratford High School. She has a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science and a Master of Science in Animal Science, both from Texas Tech University. She has been involved with livestock and the western industry her whole life. Growing up, she spent her free time around horses and cattle, helping her dad as he took care of various cow-calf and yearling operations. She was also very active in 4-H and FFA. During her time at Tech, she interned at the Four Sixes Ranch in the horse division, getting hands-on knowledge of equine reproduction. Jaci also has an interest in equine therapy and ran a magnawave business throughout her college career. While at Texas Tech, she was the Reserve Champion Individual on the National Championship judging team in 2021 at the AQHA World Championship Show. After completing her judging career, she was asked to be an assistant coach of the TTU horse judging team. She coached for two years while completing her master’s. In addition, Jaci served as a TA and taught General Animal Science labs while also assisting with research projects at the Davis College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources Department. Jaci was a member of the Texas Tech University Ranch Horse Team from 2021 to 2024. During her time on the team, the TTU RHT won 3 National Championships and won the D1 Collegiate SHTX World Championship twice. Jaci is most excited to join the team at LCC to help students find their passions in the horse industry. She can’t wait to share her knowledge and passions to help students grow and feel confident to continue their journeys after LCC!

Grace Wilson, Horse Program Assistant

Grace is a graduate of the Horse Training and Management program at Lamar Community College, earning her Associate’s Degree in 2021. Originally from Ohio, she grew up riding at a small reining barn and was actively involved in her local 4-H club, showing in ranch, reining, and speed events.

Following graduation, Grace was hired full-time after completing an internship as an assistant trainer at Warren Performance Horses in Franktown, Colorado. There, she had the opportunity to show high caliber reining horses and gain professional training and coaching experience.

In late 2022, Grace returned to Ohio to launch her own business, Grace Wilson Performance Horses, LLC where she specializes in starting horses under saddle, laying strong reining foundations, and introducing young horses to the barrel pattern.

In addition to her training business, Grace recently launched her photography and marketing company, Lucky Number 7 Media. Grace is passionate about helping others grow their confidence and skills in the horse industry and is excited to share her knowledge and experience with the next generation of horsemen and women.

Nate Hoey, Assistant Rodeo Coach

Nate Hoey brings a lifelong passion for rodeo and a strong competitive background to his role as Assistant Rodeo Coach at Lamar Community College. He began riding bulls at the age of 12 and quickly developed into a dedicated and driven competitor.

Nate competed on the Lamar Community College rodeo team from 2017 to 2019, qualifying for the College National Finals Rodeo both years. In 2019, he earned his PRCA and PBR cards and has since built an impressive career in the professional rodeo world. His accomplishments include multiple PBR event wins, three CPRA titles, and three KPRA titles.

Beyond the arena, Nate is known for his strong work ethic, leadership, and commitment to the next generation of rodeo athletes. His experience, knowledge of the sport, and passion for mentoring make him a valuable addition to the Lamar Community College rodeo program.

Cole Bennett, Head Ranch Horse Coach

Cole Bennett serves as the Ranch Horse Coach and is a vital member of the team responsible for teaching basic care and training, advanced performance training, and specialized courses in horse training. He resides near Syracuse, Kansas, with his wife Brittani and their children, Brynnleigh and Chet. Together, they operate a small cow-calf business and a horse training enterprise known as Cole Bennett Cowhorses, LLC.

Born and raised in Syracuse, Cole grew up in a family where horses played a significant role in their everyday life. He actively participated in gathering cattle with his father and enjoyed various equestrian events during his youth. In high school, he competed in saddle bronc riding and team roping. Following his graduation, Cole continued to hone his skills by working in feedlots and taking on various ranch jobs, always striving to become a better horseman. He also began starting colts for extra income along the way.
Cole did not have a specific plan for his journey, but he always admired those who rode exceptional horses. Lacking the means to purchase such a horse, he took the initiative to ask questions and learn from others, eventually leading to the establishment of his horse training business. He feels a deep sense of gratitude for being able to pursue this passion daily while raising his children in the same lifestyle he cherished growing up.

Since 2017, Cole has competed at the state level in open competitions sanctioned by the NRCHA, aligning himself with organizations such as the Colorado Reined Cowhorse Association and the Panhandle Reined Cowhorse Association, among others. In 2020, he participated in his first premier event with the NRCHA. Additionally, Cole enjoys competing in VRH and Ranching Heritage Challenge events throughout the year. Recently, in December 2023, he tested for and received his NRCHA judge’s card.

In his limited free time, Cole finds enjoyment in golfing, although his commitments often keep him from pursuing this hobby as much as he would like. He places great value on his relationship with the Lord and his family, particularly enjoying the opportunity to raise his children within this lifestyle.

Cole expresses his gratitude for his role as Ranch Horse Coach, stating, “I really want to help and support the next generation interested in the ranch horse team and use my knowledge from the mistakes we’ve made along the way to assist them in becoming the horsemen they aspire to be. Whether they intend to train for the public or ride for pleasure as a non-pro, we need more people entering the performance horse industry. I believe this role is a perfect fit for me to help facilitate that.”

HTM-equinecomplex-tour

Located on over forty acres, LCC’s equine grounds give students ample room to improve their riding and horsemanship skills. Dedicated in the fall of 2009, the Equine Complex building includes the 90’ by 210’ indoor arena, 64 box stalls, a demonstration lab used for vet procedures, reproduction exams, and rehabilitation sessions, two classrooms, faculty offices, four tack rooms, a conference room, and restrooms.

Additionally, we have two large 150’ by 300’ outdoor arenas, ten round pens, a block stall barn with 30 additional stalls including a foaling stall and two tack rooms, outside riding trails, and a warm-up area provide for a great experience. In spring of 2024, we recently added a 120-foot cutting pen is a great training space for students working with young horses and cows. It has a 10-foot-wide alleyway around it, making it easy to access six individual round pens. This setup allows students to move cattle smoothly and safely. The design promotes hands-on learning for students while keeping both horses and cattle secure.

The facilities enable instructors to demonstrate skills then work with students to perfect their skills. Labs are divided between instructors to ensure that students receive individualized instruction. With over 300 days of sunshine, students are able to ride outdoors most of the time.

Students from Lamar’s Equine Business Management and Horse Training and Management programs are required to do a semester-long internship. This internship needs to be lined up by each student before their fourth semester.

Internship Requirements

Students must completed a total of 15 weeks and 540 hours at their internships. Students can go on their internships during the spring semester of their sophomore year. Some students may also choose to go on theirs in the summer after their last semester of college. These internships can be paid or unpaid, and housing can be optional.

Students are expected to show up each day committed to doing their best, while maintaining professionalism through organization, punctuality, and a strong knowledge base.

$1,000 Horse Programs Scholarship for High School Seniors

If you have a strong background with horses or competed in events like rodeo or ranch horse, you are eligible for this scholarship! NVRHA, CJRA, and 4H high school seniors are eligible to apply for a $1,000 scholarship for the Lamar Horse Programs. Students must complete a riding interview and be accepted into the horse programs in order to be eligible for the scholarship.

To apply, fill out the Student Questionnaire and submit a one-page paper on why you should be selected. Applicants must also submit one letter of recommendation from a professional in the horse/rodeo industry.

The Equine Club brings together students who share a passion for horses and the equine industry. Members participate in hands-on activities, industry events, community service, and fundraising, while connecting with peers and professionals in the field. The Ranch Horse Team competes in events that showcase versatility and horsemanship, including ranch riding, reining, trail, and cattle work. Team members refine their training and riding skills while representing Lamar Community College at collegiate competitions. My time at LCC in the HTM and EBM programs was instrumental in preparing me for success after school. At LCC, we were held to high standards and entrusted with numerous responsibilities, including working with a variety of horses, early mornings, late nights, and tasks like feed crew management. These day-to-day duties taught me discipline and time management, which laid a solid foundation for my future endeavors.
One of the most valuable aspects of my education was the hands-on learning. We gained practical experience in bandaging, pulling blood, learning veterinary terminology, and providing direct care for horses. This hands-on approach equipped me with the skills I needed for my internships and jobs that followed.
For my HTM internship, I had the opportunity to work with Shali Lord, a National Finals Rodeo barrel racer. I was responsible for the care and riding of her horses, helping her manage the logistics of traveling and competing, and ensuring everything ran smoothly when she was away. The experience gave me a deeper understanding of the demands of professional rodeo.
The following summer, I completed my EBM internship at Elite Equine Veterinary, where I worked as a vet tech. I assisted with X-rays, lab work, and operated rehab equipment, all while working with high-performance horses. The veterinarian at Elite had high expectations, and we were held to a high standard, but this only helped me grow professionally.
After my internship, I was offered a permanent position at Elite. Currently, I work part-time at the vet clinic and part-time at a ranch, where I have the flexibility and support to pursue my passion for rodeo while also training younger horses.
Throughout my journey, the instructors and coaches at LCC were always supportive, encouraging me every step of the way and helping me achieve success.

Going through the horse training and management program at LCC has helped me in many ways to pursue my passion for training horses. They gave me hands on experience with multiple colts throughout my time there. I went on to intern with Dirk Blakesley, who is an LCC alumni as well, training cutting horses in Augusta Kansas. I learned so many valuable lessons of starting colts and training show horses and all the steps in between. Preparing for the futurity in Fort Worth and going to many shows as well as staying back from shows at the barn by myself to clean stalls and take care of the horses and cow herd. Hands on experience is critical to working with horses and LCC gave me the tools I needed to further my learning and am currently starting colts for the 6666 ranch in Guthrie Texas. I am beyond honored for the opportunity and can’t wait to see what the future holds. I am so thankful for the education that I got at Lamar and highly recommend it to anyone that is wanting to pursue a career in the horse industry. They are the best school to get started with!

For my internship, I worked at Lazy E Ranch in Guthrie, Oklahoma, where I worked with high-caliber racehorses and learned more about breeding science. This experience was often stressful — everything had to be perfect for these mares to ovulate and reproduce successfully.
But I’m grateful for my time there because I learned how to manage high-stress scenarios better. In the vet clinic, many of our tasks require precision. For example, we must intubate patients properly for surgery and run the blood diagnostics correctly — all while working to make both the patient and the client happy.
Often I see patients at the vet clinic that are hurt, old or sick. These patients could potentially injure someone who isn’t versed in or mindful of the ways to safely work with these horses. Now I have confidence going into work at the clinic that I can safely handle various situations. LCC continues to impact me, and I recommend that any student interested in learning more about horses and equine careers consider studying there.

Hi Ms. Tomoson,
I’m writing you to express my extreme gratitude for all you and the Equine Business Management program has done to prepare me to be successful, not only in my internship but also the rest of my career in the equine industry. I interned at Rocky Mountain Quarter Horse Association, and I absolutely love it. I assist with everything from the day to day operations at our office in Brighton, CO, to being at our shows around the state, as well as our horse races. The EBM program has undoubtedly provided me with the knowledge, of not only the business side of my job at RMQHA, but as well as the equine aspects of my job. LCC has also instilled a high level of work ethic and a love for the Equine and Ag industries leading me to continue my education at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Co., studying animal science. Ms.Tomoson, you have gifted me with the love of learning about all this industry has to offer, and I can’t thank you enough.

Hi JJ and Jason,
I just wanted to write to you both and tell you THANK YOU for all that you taught me when I was at Lamar. I’m still working for the people that I interned for. I ride colts for them and train reining horses. I just recently bought a new reining horse out of Hollywood Dun It. I’m in the middle of my show season, and so far I’m doing awesome. I’m sitting first in the state of California in my basic class, and I have a chance to qualify for the Affiliate Finals in Oklahoma. If I make Top 4 there, then I qualify for Scottsdale, Arizona! From there I’m going to try to qualify for WORLD next year! You taught me so much, and I wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for you two so once again – THANK YOU!

Just checkin in to say “hi.” Hope all is well with you at Lamar.
I was wondering if you were going to be in Amarillo during the WRCA finals. If so, I am goin to be there selling horses at the bloodstock headquarters sale. Maybe we could have dinner.
I also wanted to thank you for teaching me all that you did at Lamar. It has made me very successful as a trainer. I currently have a barn and arena leased, and I am training ranch horses. I have more colts to ride than I can handle!!!!! I hope to take two horses to my first show in January in the versatility ranch horse. I’m excited and nervous I want to do well.
