SilverSneakers

As a SilverSneakers® member, area seniors can attend LCC’s Fitness Center, a Healthways SilverSneakers® Fitness Program, to utilize its exercise equipment and attend SilverSneakers® fitness classes.

SilverSneakers® is intended for Medicare-eligible seniors, but it is also open to Colorado PERA retirees, even if they retire younger than 65.

The LCC Fitness Center is open to all residents regardless of SilverSneakers® eligibility. Individuals over the age of 60 who are not SilverSneakers®-eligible are welcome to become members at $40 every four months. All LCC Fitness Center members may attend SilverSneakers® classes.

Healthways SilverSneakers® group exercise classes at LCC include SilverSneakers® Muscular Strength & Range of Movement (MSROM) and Cardio Circuit, multi-level, equipment-based, total-body conditioning classes. They are designed to minimize age-related physical deterioration, improve health-related and skill-related physical fitness components to increase functional activities for daily living, and increase a person’s sense of well-being in a group exercise setting. Classes are intended to improve overall fitness, promote health education, especially as it relates to health status issues, and encourage social interaction in a group setting. The classes’ foci are to increase muscular strength, endurance and range of motion, resulting in functional improvements in posture, balance, weight transfer activities, coordination, agility and body awareness.

LCC currently offers SilverSneakers® MSROM classes on Mondays and Wednesdays at 9:30 to 10:30 am. They allow participants to have fun and move to music through a variety of exercises designed to increase muscular strength, range of movement, and activity for daily living skills. Hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles, and a ball are offered for resistance, and a chair is used for seated and/or standing support.

The LCC Fitness Center has also added SilverSneakers® CardioCircuit classes on Fridays from 9:30 am to 10:30 am. Cardio Circuit combines fun and fitness to increase participants’ cardiovascular and muscular endurance power with a standing circuit workout. Upper-body strength work using hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles, and a ball is alternated with non-impact aerobic choreography. A chair is again offered for support, head-to-toe stretching, and complete relaxation in a comfortable position.

Fitness is important in maintaining and improving health, happiness, self esteem and overall wellness. In senior adults, it is associated with improved range of motion with every day activities, a decreased sense of falling, and increased socialization. The LCC Fitness Center encourages area residents of all ages to invest themselves by investing in their health. The Fitness Center is located in the upper level of the Wellness Center on the Lamar Community College campus. For more information on SilverSneakers® and LCC memberships, contact (719) 336-1672 or fitness.center@lamarcc.edu.

SilverSneakers® instructors receive training and support that are offered by no other organization in the country. Older-adult instructor training courses, evaluations, frequent feedback, and continuing education in older-adult fitness are standard in the curriculum. This ensures that members receive quality instruction from instructors who understand the everchanging needs of active and newly active older adults.
